James Smith Battle (1846-1894) of Tarboro, NC, was a student and member of the Philanthropic Society from 1863 to 1867 but did not receive a degree. He became a manufacturer, served in the NC Senate from 1881 to 1883, and was a University trustee from 1883 to 1891.
